Husband, Wife Both Get Prison in Maiming of Puppy

The husband and wife who pleaded guilty to mutilating a puppy later named Miss Harper have each been sentenced to one year in prison, authorities said.

The man and woman will also serve five years of probation after pleading guilty to animal cruelty and other charges in after the pup was found with her ears and back leg cut off in 2013, according to the Nassau County SPCA. 

The man was sentenced Wednesday; his wife was sentenced last earlier in August.

A veterinary aide who cut off the dog's hind leg was also arrested after the dog was found; Newsday reported that he was sentenced to 3 years' conditional discharge in November. 

More than 400 people applied to to adopt Miss Harper after she was found in 2013 and she was placed with a family in Bellmore about a year after she was discovered, according to Newsday
