Man Arraigned on Horse Sex Assault Charge

A Shelton man has pleaded not guilty to a charge of sexually assaulting a neighbor's horse.

The lawyer for Marian Wegiel said he believes there were communication problems between his client, who is Polish, and police. The lawyer, Ralph Crozier, asked for a Polish translator to attend Wegiel's next court date on Dec. 7.

Crozier said the 63-year-old Wegiel, who was arrested Oct. 18 in his neighbor's corral, was on his neighbor's property because he noticed the horses had become frightened by a loud noise and tried to calm them.

Police said three horses were in the corral and the one female animal appeared to have been touched.

Wegiel was ordered by a Derby Superior Court judge to stay off his neighbor's property.
