A Long Island driver has been arrested for leaving the scene of an accident after police say he struck and killed a 42-year-old man and his dog.

According to police, Robert Michaels was walking his dog on Round Swamp Road in Old Bethpage early Thursday morning when he and the dog were hit by 37-year-old Matthew Johnstone's Dodge Avenger.

Johnstone allegedly fled without stopping but later returned and was arrested.

Michaels was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. His dog was dead at the scene, police said.

Johnstone was charged with leaving the scene of an incident and is expected to be arraigned Thursday.

Information on an attorney for Johnstone was not immediately available.
