FDNY Caps Fuel Leak on Buckeye Pipeline in Brooklyn

Firefighters in Brooklyn have capped a leak on the Buckeye Pipeline, one of the largest petroleum distributors in the area, officials say.

The FDNY says it was called to Junius Street and Linden Boulevard in Brownsville at about 5:30 p.m. for reports of a gas odor, and located a leak in the pipe.

Firefighters were able to contain the leak. Foam was being brought in to clean up the leaked fuel.

The Buckeye Pipeline delivers fuels to New York City and Long Island terminals and to both LaGuardia and Kennedy airports. The leak didn't appear to affect any flights.

There were no evacuations in the area but traffic was briefly affected.

Buckeye Pipe Line Company said in a statement a third party working in the area damaged the concrete-encased pipeline while excavating with power equipment, causing two barrels of gasoline to release. Buckeye crews responded right away along with FDNY.

"The FDNY quickly located and effectively minimized the release in conjunction with Buckeye personnel," the company said. "There is no danger to the community."

There was no fire or reported injuries, and Buckeye says the spill was properly contained and a cleanup was underway.

Environmental officials were notified, Buckeye said.
