Ex-Cop Accused of Shooting Wife Dead in Front of Kids

A former police officer who was once honored as a hero is facing charges after authorities say he shot and killed his wife in front of their two young children in Queens Saturday morning.

Retired NYPD officer Kevin Canty was arrested after the shooting inside the home on 101st Avenue and 104th Street in Ozone Park. Law enforcement sources say his wife, 40-year-old Jessica Canty, was found in the home with 10 apparent gunshot wounds.

Canty allegedly told detectives "I'm sorry" and said he loved his wife, but she was cheating on him.

One neighbor said she saw the children run into a nearby deli screaming for help and saying their father had just shot their mother.

"The kids were hysterical," said Heidi Gamble.

Canty was arraigned Sunday on second-degree murder and weapons charges. Attorney information for him wasn't available.

Canty retired from the NYPD about a year ago due to a disability from an accident. Two years ago, he was honored as a hero for helping save a subway rider who had a heart attack.
