Firefighters Rescue Women After East Village Apartment Fire

A trio of firefighters rescued two women who had lost consciousness in a smoke-filled apartment building in the East Village Sunday morning, the FDNY says.

Fire crews went to the apartment building on St. Marks Place around 8 a.m. after getting a call about several people trapped inside the burning building.

When they arrived, crews pried open a back door and found smoke and a small fire inside. The blaze was quickly extinguished, and firefighters set off to see if anyone was still inside.

That’s when firefighters Michael Demeo, John Rocchio and Marlon Sahai found the two unconscious women on the floor in two separate rooms.

They pulled the women out, and EMS crews took them to area hospitals. Both were listed in serious condition.

A third person who was inside the building when the blaze broke out was able to escape and was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
