Driver Hits Pedestrian, Several Cars in Brooklyn, Killing 1: NYPD

A hit-and-run driver struck a pedestrian, then hit several other vehicles in Brooklyn on Saturday, killing one person and injuring seven others, police said.

Terrance Smith was driving his black 2012 Infiniti when he struck Michael Joefield, 21, and other cars just after 8:30 p.m. near Glenmore Avenue and Powell Street in Brownsville, the NYPD said. Joefield was apparently rollerblading when he was hit.

Officers found Joefield lying in the street with trauma to his body before paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene, authorities said.

Smith tried to flee but was arrested, police said. The 37-year-old from Bedford Heights, Ohio, was charged with driving while ability impaired and operator leaving the scene of the accident. It wasn't clear whether he had an attorney.

One other victim was in serious condition but expected to survive, police said. Five people suffered minor injuries and one refused medical assistance, police said.

The investigation is ongoing by the NYPD's Highway Patrol Collision Investigation Squad.
