Driver Dies in Crash at NJ Racecourse

A driver died in a crash at a New Jersey racecourse Saturday afternoon, according to officials.

Amanda Gambacorto was participating in a race clinic at Wall Speedway in Wall Township, according to a tweet from New Jersey State Police.

Gambacorto, 21, crashed at 12:30 p.m. and was driving a three-quarter midget car. Authorities said she struck a wall and was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital.

Midget race cars with single-seat, open cockpits were first developed in the 1930s, and smaller, "three-quarter" midget race cars were introduced in the 1940s, according to the American TQ Midget Racing Association.
