A Long Island marine research group is working with local authorities on a plan to remove a dead whale that has washed ashore.

Newsday reports that the whale washed ashore on a Hampton Bays beach Wednesday morning.

Robert DiGiovanni of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation says the whale is about 35 feet long.

DiGiovanni tells Newsday he anticipates having the whale totally out of the water and removed from the beach by Thursday.

DiGiovanni says a necropsy to determine the animal's cause of death likely can be performed Thursday on the beach.
