A Long Island prosecutor says he believes the same people who dumped toxins at a park and a veterans' housing development are responsible for similar substances recently found in a wetlands area.
Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said Friday that testing found asbestos and other hazardous materials in the six-acre Deer Park wetlands. It's adjacent to a creek in the Great South Bay watershed.
Spota said the hazardous materials also included DDT, lead, arsenic and zinc. He called the dumping an "environmental crime.''
Spota says the results were similar to earlier findings at a Brentwood park, a Central Islip lot and an Islandia neighborhood for war veterans.
All four locations are within the Town of Islip.
He says an investigation into how the material wound up there is ongoing.
