Cyclist Killed in Hit-Run With Mercedes Van: NYPD

A 40-year-old cyclist died after being run over by a Mercedes Benz van in Queens Sunday night, police say.

The cyclist was riding west on Rockaway Boulevard in Ozone Park at about 9:30 p.m. when he sideswiped the passenger side of the black van, which was also traveled west on Rockaway Boulevard. The contact knocked the bicyclist to the ground, and the van ran him over, police say.

Authorities say the van driver stopped and got out of the vehicle, then returned to the van and drove off without notifying police.

One man said he saw the cyclist being hit said rushed to help him. He said the victim wasn't responsive.

“I kept yelling ‘Can you move your fingers,’ but he didn’t,” the witness said.

The cyclist was taken to the hospital in critical condition but later died of his injuries.

Police believe the vehicle that hit him may have been a party bus.
