2 Killed When Car Slams Into Pole, Overturns in New Jersey

Two people were killed and three others were hurt when the car in which they were riding smashed into a pole early Friday, police say.

The car was heading west on Valley Road at Route 3 in Clifton at about 3:30 a.m. when its 20-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle, which  crashed into a pole, according to police.

The car overturned after the impact. Several people were ejected, reports the Bergen Record.

Two 21-year-old women were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital after the crash. The driver and two other passengers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Footage from the scene shows the vehicle crumpled on a roadside berm as police examine the scene.

It's not clear what caused the crash.

Part of Route 3 was closed while authorities investigated.
