Police arrested a man whose SUV careened into a Dunkin' Donuts store in Jersey City Monday evening, injuring him and seven other people.
Marco Guardiola was charged Tuesday with DWI, reckless driving, 8 counts of vehicular assault, speeding and other motor vehicle charges.
Eight people, including Guardiola, a 14-year-old girl and a pregnant woman, were hurt when the SUV crashed through a window of the shop at 318 Central Ave. at about 8:30 p.m.
Fire Director Armando Roman says the teenage girl was in the shop with her mother and sister when the accident occurred. She suffered head trauma and two broken legs. Rabson says the girl has undergone surgery.
Roman says the girl, the pregnant woman and another woman remain hospitalized. Three people, including Guardiola, were discharged from the hospital Tuesday morning.
Bystanders described a chaotic scene, with people being carried by on stretchers and gawkers crowding the avenue near the store.
Jason Wilkins, of Jersey City, said he'd never witnessed such a scene.
"My prayers go out to anyone that got hurt," Wilkins said. "It was a pretty gruesome scene."
Guardiola is expected to appear in court Tuesday afternoon. Information on an attorney wasn't available.
