Man Gets Up to Life in Prison in Metal Pipe Beating Death at Upstate New York Bar

A 27-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for beating another man to death with a pipe outside a Hudson Valley bar and restaurant.

Alvaro Ramos-Lopez was sentenced Thursday in Orange County Court, The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in August.

Prosecutors say he bludgeoned 40-year-old Armando Soriano-Martel on April 3 outside the Rey Del Pollo Bar and Restaurant in the city of Newburgh.

Soriano-Martel, a native of Honduras, later died at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh.

Ramos-Lopez apologized to the victim's brother in court, and says he acted in self-defense.
