Long Island Town to Boot Cars With 3 Unpaid Tickets: Report

A Long Island town has approved a measure to let police "boot" vehicles with three or more unpaid traffic violations.

Amityville's village trustees passed the measure in a unanimous vote Monday night, according to Newsday. The move is an alteration to a current city code that let police disable scofflaws' cars and is aimed at whittling down a backlog of 4,000 outstanding traffic tickets.

Previously, police officers were only able to boot cars if they caught a car currently in violation. Now, Newsday reports, they can disable cars with three or more violations as soon as they are found.

The newspaper reports that the village is owed about $400,000 in unpaid tickets. About $40,000 worth of those are owed by repeat offenders.

The law will be filed with the state and is set to be enforceable in about a week.

"Folks out there who want to come clean, now's the time to do it," said Nick LaLota, a village trustee.
