Playboy John Mayer should be surrounded by a bevy of brunettes and blondes -- but he often finds himself out of luck in love, the singer confessed.

The singer-songwriter, who is as famous for his arm candy as he is for his guitar prowess, said he hesitates to date women because his love life is so scrutinized, according to The New York Times

"I should be having sex with more girls," the musician told the paper.

"It's crazy to me that in my head, that being 32 and dating women is going to get me in trouble," Mayor said. "I can't even explain to you how terrible that feels that I equate dating a woman with punishment, shame, guilt, disappointment, reproach, reprimand, persecution. It's a nightmare."

Mayer was linked to the likes of Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston. At a concert in New York Sunday, he again ripped into claims that he's a ladies man who gets around.

"They say I'm a womanizer," he said. "I say I haven't met enough women."
