Madonna to Headline Super Bowl XLVI

The pop icon will be flanked by Cirque du Soleil performers during the halftime show.

The Super Bowl halftime show never wants for spectacle, and next February's event has just ensured that all eyes will remain on the field when both teams head to the locker room.

In an official statement, the NFL has announced that Madonna will be headlining this year's halftime show flanked by members of the surreal acrobatic troupe Cirque du Soleil.

The NFL proudly calls the halftime show "the most-watched musical event of the year." Last year, 162 million U.S. viewers tuned in.

Madonna follows in the footsteps of musical luminaries such as Bruce Springsteen, U2, Prince, the Rolling Stones, and Paul McCartney. Despite being the top-selling female recording artist of all time, this will be the 53-year-old's first Super Bowl appearance.

The multi-talented pop icon is set to unveil her feature film directorial debut, the historical drama "W.E.," in theaters this week.

Super Bowl XLVI will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. on Feb. 5, 2012.
