Morning Massacre: Prof. Plum in the Library With a PriceChopper

Price reductions have become the norm in this current climate of market panic, from new condo developments to storied co-ops and everything in between. It's grim out there, and every morning until that most gruesome day of all (Halloween, 'natch), we'll take a look at some of the most severe recent PriceChoppers. First up, our bloodthirst takes us to the Upper West Side.

Was: $12,999,000
Now: $11,700,000
You Save!: $1,299,000

The listing refers to this Central Park West west duplex as a "Fabled Penthouse," and the moral of the story is clear: While a circular bi-level library housed in a private dome is good for wowing friends and relatives, it's probably not worth a few million on its own. Located in the St. Urban at 89th Street, this 3BR, 4BA co-op has gone through some tough times of late. First listed at $16.5 million in April, the penthouse took two major cuts in May and September before this latest chop. Per the listing, "The lower floor, dedicated as the working level is adorned with Bird's eye Maple bookcases, and the top floor or thinking level is designed as a classical retreat inside the dome, which opens to a private rooftop reading terrace and observation deck." Have a think and let us know if the price is finally right.
