Curbed National: Trump Clan Gets Hands Dirty in Chicago

With sister site Curbed Chicago due to launch next month—oh, did we mention we're launching Curbed Chicago next month?—we thought we'd take the opportunity of a Trump topping-off to check in on the Windy City. By the middle of next month, you’ll have all the Chicago news you can handle at chicago.curbed.com. Until then...

Donald Trump & Family were in Chicago yesterday afternoon for a press conference to celebrate the topping-off of the Trump International Hotel and Tower on the Chicago River (it's hooge). The Donald was joined by his three oldest children, Donald Jr., Ivanka (whose face was easily recognized from being plastered all over town on posters advertising the building), and Eric, who joined him in a handprints-in-cement ceremony after taking questions from the press. Of course in New York, Trump has a different relationship with the cement at his projects. The press was hungry for a chance to get the infamously outspoken mogul's opinion on the country's current economic crisis. Mr. Trump was only too happy to oblige.

Trump called the financial bust "very sad," reminding attendees that he predicted a coming "depression" on MSNBC two years ago, and emphatically insisting (in a not-so-thinly veiled jab at the nearby superlative-threatening Chicago Spire) that "many buildings that are proposed right now, they just won't get built. The banks have no money left. None."

At 1,362 feet high,Trump's new Chicago codpiece is, in fact, the tallest building to go up in North America since the Sears Tower was completed in 1974. The tower recently topped off at 1,171 feet, its roof height. A 191-foot spire will be installed atop the structure next month, when Trump will be back for yet another publicity orgy. After all, why have one topping off ceremony when you can have two? More is more.
