WILLETS POINT—The huge redevelopment plan for the Iron Triangle is going to be the gift that keeps on giving for year and years. For instance, today there was a City Council hearing that dealt with both the toxic issue of eminent domain and the literal issue of the toxicity of the land on which the city seeks to build its megaplex of housing, hotels and retail. Per a release, one environmental lawyer working with the land owners testified that, actually, Willets Point dirt is so nice you might want to eat it, perhaps seasoned with some truffle oil topped with goat cheese: "The city's own studies have failed to detect the terrible contamination they claim is present in Willets Point. There are official federal and state process for identifying the most contaminated sites and those processes have never shown that Willets Point is contaminated at even a fraction of the levels that would warrant remediation."
