Afflito and her friend, Damaris Lamberty, 48, were struck Jan. 6 by a white SUV that was heading east on Verona Avenue, near Broadway, in Newark, officials said. The driver fled the scene.

Both women were social workers with Essex County's Department of Welfare, according to Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr.
