A shark was spotted near Coney Island beach Saturday, a city parks spokesperson said.
Lifeguards notified NYPD aviation when they saw a small gray shark close to the shoreline in a section of the beach.
The police scanned the area and didn't see any additional shark activity, said Crystal Howard of the parks department.
"It is a common occurrence given fishing that happens off the pier," said Ms. Howard.
The beach was not evacuated, said the parks department.
