Suffolk County Community College Plaque Honoring World War II Vets Lists Wrong US Entry Date

A WWII plaque at Suffolk Community College will be changed after an official noticed the date was incorrect

Suffolk County Community College officials say they will correct a plaque honoring veterans at the school's Selden campus after an employee discovered it gave the wrong date for the United States' entry into World War II.

Newsday reports (http://nwsdy.li/1HAN7y) the metal plaque, set in a stone base and installed in 2006, lists the years of U.S. involvement in thewar as 1940 to 1945.

Spokesman Drew Biondo says the plaque will be altered to change the entry year to 1941.

Salvatore Esposito, an Army veteran working on the college's maintenance crew, says he has complained for years that the plaque was incorrect.

Officials say they were unaware of Esposito's complaints.

Biondo says the change will be made after a contractor is hired, which may require competitive bidding under county rules.
