Pope Appoints New Bishop of NJ's Metuchen Diocese

Pope Francis has named a new bishop for New Jersey's Metuchen Diocese.

Monsignor James Checchio will succeed Bishop Paul Bootkoski, who submitted his resignation last year when he reached the mandatory retirement age of 75.

Checchio is rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome. The bishop-elect was born in 1966 in Camden and was ordained a priest in 1992.

The Metuchen Diocese serves 644,851 Roman Catholics in Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties.
