Cops: N.J. Deli Clerk Slain in Robbery Attempt

Authorities in Bergen County says a store clerk in Garfield has been shot and killed in an apparent robbery attempt.

Chief of Detectives Joseph Macellaro of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office says the man's body was discovered by a customer, who called 911 at 3:24 Saturday afternoon.

Macellaro tells The Record of Bergen County they believe the motive was robbery as money was found strewn about the scene.

The newspaper reports it's the second shooting at the store in less than five years and the fourth apparent robbery attempt.

Police haven't yet released the victim's name, but Channel 7 Eyewitness News has identified him as 30-year-old Ahmed Alsurakhi.

Neighbors and customers tell The Record the victim is the son of store owner Mohammed Alsurakhi.
