New Jersey Cop Cleared in Gun Battle With Suspect That Wounded Girl

Prosecutors say no charges will be filed against a police officer who engaged in a gun battle with a suspect that left a young girl injured last year.

Monmouth County prosecutors announced Wednesday that an investigation found the Asbury Park officer's use of deadly force was justified. The officer's name has not been released.

Authorities say a bullet fired in the Nov. 4 incident went through a wall and grazed an 8-year-old girl who was watching television in her bedroom. She was treated at a hospital.

Prosecutors say the officer fired his weapon after the suspect, 20-year old Asbury Park resident Dante Allen, had shot at him. Allen was shot in the leg.

It's still not known who fired the shot that struck the girl.

Allen has been charged with attempted murder and two weapons offenses.
