A New Jersey man faces a charge of driving while intoxicated after his car slammed into a police cruiser, leaving an officer with a concussion and other injuries, authorities said Saturday.
The crash occurred shortly before midnight Friday in the area of Main Avenue and Madison Street in Passaic. Authorities say the police cruiser ended up on a concrete embankment and struck a utility pole.
In addition to DWI, Edwin Paredes, 34, of Bloomfield, N.J., was charged with refusing to take a Breathalyzer test, DWI in a school zone and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, police said.
The officer, whose identity wasn't disclosed by investigators, was taken to a hospital and treated for a concussion, a head laceration and neck and back injuries. A passenger in Paredes' car was treated for an arm injury.
Paredes was jailed ion lieu of $35,000 bail it was unclear whether he had retained a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
