NY Launches Patient Registration for Medical Marijuana

The New York health department has launched its online registration system for patients to buy medical marijuana when it becomes available in January.

Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker says the system for certifications and registrations means "qualified patients will soon have access to treatment they need."

According to the department, patients need certification from a registered doctor, then have to access the online system to apply for a registry identification card.

They also need photo identification and documentation of state residency.

Those under 18 must apply through a proxy.

Under the state's new law, patients with a qualifying condition can get permission from their doctor to obtain non-smokable forms of cannabis.

Registration information is posted at http://www.health.ny.gov/regulations/medical_marijuana/patients/
