New NYPD Recruits Most Diverse Class in City's History

A new class of New York City police recruits is the most diverse class in the department's history.

Police statistics show 26 of the new recruits sworn in on Friday are women, marking the highest percentage of female recruits in a single academy class.

Of the 99 recruits hired, 23 of them are African-American, also setting a department record for diversity. More than 70 percent of the newly hired officers live within the five boroughs of New York City.

Nearly 6,000 new police officers have been hired in New York City since January 2014. Close to 1,400 were hired in January.

The recent academy classes follow a 2015 announcement by Democratic New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio that the police department would put an additional 2,000 on the street.
