Manhole Fire Darkens Apartments on NYC Upper West Side

A manhole fire knocked out electric power Sunday night in two apartment buildings on New York City's Upper West Side, city fire officials said.

Crews from Consolidated Edison were at the scene, working to restore service.

Hundreds of apartments were without power in buildings located at 245 W. 107th St. and 226 W. 108th St. as a result of the 7:30 p.m. fire, officials said. Power was expected to be restored by 9 a.m.

There were no injuries related to the manhole fire and no residents were evacuated from the nearby buildings.

Officials did not say how many customers were affected or what set off the fires.
