Sotomayor Mourns Plan to Close Her Old Bronx School

Sotomayor was the valedictorian of the class of 1968 at the Blessed Sacrament School

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is among the alumni mourning plans to close 24 Roman Catholic schools across New York City.

Sotomayor was the valedictorian of the class of 1968 at the Blessed Sacrament School, which is one of seven elementary schools in the Bronx targeted for closure by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. All of the schools have been struggling financially.

Sotomayor tells The New York Times she is "heartbroken,'' over the school's planned demise.

The justice says her mother saved every penny she had to send her to Blessed Sacrament, which has an alumni list that also includes the U.S. ambassador to Uruguay, Julissa Reynoso, hip-hop mogul Sean Combs and singer and actress Jennifer Lopez.
