A drunken driver who had crashed into a pole rented the car in order to avoid the court-mandated breath analyzer system in his own vehicle, police on Long Island said.
Investigators said 27-year-old Marvin Rice Jr., of Shirley, lost control of a rental car in Brentwood Sunday morning and struck a pole. He was charged with driving while intoxicated.
Authorities said Rice was convicted in 2005 of drunken driving and had agreed to participate in an ignition-lock program which requires drivers to submit a breath test before starting the vehicle.
Rice will be arraigned April 13 in Central Islip.
