Castings for Drescher, Potts and Meester

While you were watching “Hit List” come to life at 54 Below, here’s what was happening this week In the Wings.

The Nanny is coming to Broadway. Fran Drescher will make her debut in “Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella” starting Feb. 4 and thru April 13. She’ll be playing Cinderella’s evil stepmother Madame, succeeding Harriet Harris, who originated the role in the Broadway production. Mr. Sheffield must be so proud! [More info]

“Designing Women” star Annie Potts heading to “Pippin.” She’ll play Berthe in the Tony-winning musical, starting Jan. 21. If all goes well, hopefully “Pippin” will stage a full “Designing Women” reunion. Jean Smart as Fastrada! Meshach Taylor as Charlemagne! Delta Burke as the Leading Player! [More info]

Leighton Meester is playing Curley’s wife in “Of Mice and Men.” The “Gossip Girl” star joins James Franco and Chris O’Dowd in the limited run production, opening April 16. Meester’s character in the play is a scheming, beauty-obsessed temptress. So it’s not that much of a stretch from Blair Waldorf, huh? [More info]

“The Velocity of Autumn” joins the lineup of new plays debuting this Spring. Academy Award winner Estelle Parsons and two-time Tony winner Stephen Spinella will star in the Molly Smith-directed play, written by Eric Coble. The comedy, about a mother and her estranged son, will open at Broadway’s Booth Theatre for a limited engagement on April 21. [More info]

WNET will air The Public Theater’s acclaimed “The Apple Family Plays: Scenes from the Life in the County.” The four Richard Nelson plays – “That Hopey Changey Thing,” “Sweet and Sad,” “Sorry” and “Regular Singing” -- have premiered at The Public Theater each year since 2010. No official airing dates have been announced yet, but expect to see it sometime in 2014. [More info]
