Canoers Rescued After Capsizing in Long Island Bay

One of the men was stranded in Smithtown Bay's icy waters for 20 minutes, and the other for 45 minutes

A canoe with two men in it overturned in Long Island's Smithtown Bay Sunday and the pair was later rescued from the 48-degree water.

One of the men was stranded in the water for 20 minutes, and the other for 45 minutes.

They were rescued by a Suffolk County Department Police officer and Smithtown Public Safety Bay constable after witnesses alerted the authorities about the canoe overturning.

The men were being treated for hypothermia, cuts and abrasions.
