NJ Cop Indicted in Luring of 12-Year-Old Girl

Former Woodland Park Police Officer Steven Vigorito Jr. faces luring, attempted sexual assault, child endangerment and official misconduct-related charges

A former northern New Jersey police officer has been indicted for the attempted sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl he met while assisting her family in an unrelated police matter.

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes announced several charges Thursday against former Woodland Park Police Officer Steven Vigorito Jr.

He faces luring, attempted sexual assault, child endangerment and official misconduct-related charges.

Vigorito previously pleaded not guilty through a public defender following his arrest in April. It is not clear who currently represents him.

Prosecutors say the girl's family complained to the police department about Vigorito's conduct.

Detectives posing as the girl allegedly then received explicit texts from Vigorito, asking to meet her for sex.

Valdes says two additional alleged victims came forward following Vigorito's arrest.

He remains free on $250,000 bail.
