Woman Survives 5 Floor Fall to Escape Blaze

A woman trying to escape a fire in a Bronx apartment fell five floors, but survived. A man was rescued from inside the building.

Firefighters responded to building at the Bronxdale complexes around 7 p.m. Saturday. Neighbors said the woman had been hanging on to an air-conditioner that was in the fifth-floor window, but fell to the ground.

The 39-year-old woman was desperately trying to cling to the air conditioner, even as a 60-year-old man was trapped inside, witnesses and fire sources told the Daily News.

"She was hanging on to the air conditioner and she lost her grip," said Hector, a 35-year-old neighbor who watched the scene. He told the News: "She did not scream. She hit the steps and bounced."

Firefighters found the man when they went into the building.

Both the man and woman were hospitalized.

The fire started gutted the fifth-floor Parkchester apartment in minutes, authorities said.
