Tractor-Trailer Hits, Kills Man in Newark

Authorities are investigating after a tractor-trailer hit and killed a man in Newark Monday evening.

Surveillance video obtained exclusively by NBC 4 New York shows the moment a tractor-trailer driver apparently misjudges a turn at the corner of Leslie Street and Chancellor Avenue and smashes into a parked SUV.

At the driver's side of the SUV is a man hunched down, the video shows, and he's crushed by the impact.

Relatives said the 36-year-old man died on the way to the hospital. The victim's cousin, Mark Wiggins, said his sister and two young children were sitting in the SUV and witnessed the impact.

The victim, who has not been officially identified, was well known in the neighborhood, according to Wiggins.

The video goes on to show the tractor-trailer pulling away and stopping, then taking off. It's unclear if authorities are still looking for the truck driver and what charges the driver may face.

Leslie Street is residential and a sign shows a truck that large should not have been traveling on it.

The Essex County prosecutor's office has not returned calls seeking information.
