The Met Drops 74 Jobs

The Met has announced it's laying off more than a quarter of its merchandising staff.

The museum said Thursday the elimination of 74 positions is on top of the 53 jobs it's cut in recent months. The new round of cuts will count toward its goal of reducing its overall staff of 2,500 by approximately 10 percent by July.

The museum has closed eight of its 23 merchandising departments across the country and plans to shutter another seven. In February, the Met announced it would close the doors on its store at the South Street Seaport Museum.

Hiring and merit raises also are frozen at the museum.

The Met attributed the cuts to a drop in sales, losses to its endowment, reductions in help from the city, and a decline in foreign visitors.
