The Great Ice Box Derby

The wild bunch behind New York's Big Wheel Race is bringing their penchant for high speeds on cheap rides to the winter side of life. Zombie Unicorn, as they're known, are planning The Great Ice Box Derby, which Gothamist believes is New York's first Ice Box Derby!

All riders need to participate is "a soapbox vehicle, a sled with caster wheels, a big wheel with skis, trike with tin foil or some similar creation that can roll and slide." The only requirement is that the bike, trike or whatever it is can turn, or at least allows its rider bail out into a fence.  Just no bikes.

For riders who can balance speed and survival, prizes are awarded for the most original rides, with the same for best costumes and action maneuvers. Spectators are encouraged to come out and witness this debacle, and the whole deal is free for everybody involved.

For more info, visit this Facebook page and contact the organizers. It all goes down, literally, Saturday at 2 p.m. on a hill in Central Park's east side, located around 104th street.
