String of Armed Thefts Target Long Island Stores: Police

An armed man tied up employees and stole cash from a Long Island tanning salon, the latest in a string of similar crimes, police said.

The man, carrying a handgun, entered Beach Bum Tanning in Huntington Station at around 8:30 p.m. Friday, according to Suffolk County police. He forced two workers to the rear of the store and restrained them, then took cash, police said. No customers were there, and no one was hurt.

Suffolk County police said that similar thefts nearby in September, October and November targeted a Pier 1 Imports in Huntington Station, Rainbow Shops in North Lindenhurst, Avenue Clothing in East Farmingdale, New York and Co. in West Babylon, and Avenue Clothing in Deer Park.

A cash award of $5,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
