Sources Say Paterson Will Name Kennedy

Other reports suggest governor not ready to make decision

New York Gov. David Paterson will tap Caroline Kennedy to fill the senate seat being vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton, according to an Associated Press report on MSNBC.com Friday.

Officials with knowledge of the story told the AP they think Kennedy will be Paterson's choice, but the governor wouldn't confirm it. Instead, he referenced an old baseball quote, saying, "It ain't nothin' till I calls it," according to the report.

And a report in Friday's New York Times suggested that Paterson was in no hurry to make a selection.

"There’s one choice," he told the Times. "It’s the one the governor will make. And in the end everybody will understand that."

Just Thursday, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, the second-most powerful Democrat in the state, dropped his opposition to Kennedy's candidacy.
