Worker Charged in Explosion That Injured 7 at Nyack College

Seven people were hurt in the early June explosion, but none of their injuries were life-threatening

A contract worker has been charged in connection with a blast that injured seven people at Nyack College in Rockland County early last month.

Officials say a gap in an underground gas connection may have contributed to the June 5 explosion, which shattered windows and caused a fire that was extinguished by an in-house sprinkler system. O&R had to cut electricity to several hundred. Gas service also was disrupted to dozens of customers.

Douglas Walker of South Nyack was charged with misdemeanor reckless endangerment and assault on Tuesday, authorities said.

Police tell the Journal News Walker's actions were believed to have been unintentional. But Police Chief Brent Newbury says "he should have been more responsible."

Walker was released without bail. He couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday night.
