New Yorkers' Favorite Beers by Borough

Manhattanites love drinking lager from Brooklyn Brewery, while Brooklyn and Bronx residents tend to be more partial to Grimm Artisanal Ales, and Queens residents support their homegrown Singlecut, according to a list of favorite beers collected by the beer discovery and check-in app Untappd.

Most New Yorkers tend to enjoy IPA beer, according to Greg Avola, the co-founder of Untappd, but "with the recent sour craze, I suspect the Sour Ale will be popular" during New York City Beer Week, he said in an email.

The list shows the following breakdown of favorite beers by borough, as determined from Untapped data. All the list of popular beers are based within a five-mile radius:

BROOKLYN

  1. Other Half - 2nd Anniversary IPA
  2. Grimm Artisanal Ales - Lambo Door
  3. Other Half - Oat Overdose
  4. Brooklyn Brewery - Brooklyn Lager

"Other Half tends to dominate the Brooklyn area with its biweekly can releases, where they brew a bunch of beer and sell them directly to consumers," says Avola, noting a four-hour wait during the recent release for Oat Overdose.

QUEENS

  1. Troges Brewery - Nugget Nectar
  2. Singlecut - KT66
  3. Sierra Nevada Tropical IPA
  4. Finback Crescent Fresh

"Two local breweries top out of the Queens area: Singlecut and Finback," says Avola. "Both of the beers listed here are excellent. Also, Nugget Nectar is one my personal favorites from Pennsylvania."

BRONX (Includes some Westchester)

  1. Grimm Artisanal Ales - Super Spruce
  2. Troegs Brewery - Nugget Nectar
  3. Grimm Artistan Ales - Lambo Door
  4. Other Half - 2nd Anniversary IPA

"Grimm takes Bronx! Grimm is a unique brewery that travels to other breweries to brew and can their beer, they don't have their own brewery," Avola says.

MANHATTAN

  1. Brooklyn Brewery - Brooklyn Lager
  2. Grimm Artisanal Ales - Super Spruce
  3. Other Half - 2nd Anniversary IPA
  4. Troges Brewery - Nugget Nectar

"Brooklyn Brewery is no. 1 in Manhattan area, which is a little bit surprising, but with a 5-mile radius circle, it may include parts of Williamsburg, the headquarters for Brooklyn Brewery – a top location on Untappd," Avola says.

STATEN ISLAND

  1. Samuel Adams - Cold Snap
  2. Flagship Brewery - IPA
  3. Flagship Brewery - APA
  4. Sierra Nevada Tropical IPA

"One of Staten Island's popular brewery, Flagship, takes the cake in his home brewery," Avola says.

Avola also noted some local breweries getting buzz, including Other Half Brewing, Greenpoint Beer and Ale Co. (which makes the beer over the popular Williamsburg bar Dirk & Norseman) and Grimm Artisanal Ales (a New York City brewery which brews its beers at other breweries).

Three million people use Untappd, according to a spokeswoman for the app, and New York City is its second largest market, with over 23,000 users checking in over 250,000 times within a 20-mile radius of Queens in the last 30 days.

The app is designed to help users locate new, unique and favorite beers in their area based on reviews and check-ins, similar to Yelp or Foursquare (which is also integrated in the app), according to a spokeswoman.
