New Year, New Name for One Town

Change will take place gradually

West Paterson, N.J. will enter 2009 under a new name.

It becomes Woodland Park on New Year's Day. That follows a narrowly passed November referendum in which borough voters approved the change by 25 votes.

Officials say residents don't need to take any action as far as changing their addresses for bills.

But many civic and volunteer groups in the town, including the all-volunteer fire department, haven't decided whether they'll comply with the change.

The borough plans to implement the name change gradually, so as to spread out the cost of paying for new signs. And workers have already begun placing new logos on municipal vehicles.
