Man Arrested in Hoax Bomb Threat That Evacuated New Jersey Mall

A 56-year-old man was arrested for allegedly creating widespread panic when he walked up to security guards at a New Jersey mall and told them he had found a Post-it note that said six bombs had been planted in the shopping center.

Police say Anthony Vigilante approached security personnel near the food court at Willowbrook Mall shortly before 8:30 p.m. Sunday and told them about the note he had allegedly found. Vigilante told security he had thrown the note out.

Mall management notified the Wayne Police Department, which activated its emergency evacuation procedures and got everyone out of the building as authorities investigated. Nothing was found in a search of the mall and the shopping center returned to its normal operation after three and a half hours.

Vigilante was taken into custody at the scene and later charged with creating a false alarm. He is awaiting arraignment. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

The mall is located just outside of New York City, and has more than 170 stores and restaurants.
