Officials say a Long Island teenager collapsed and later died after playing basketball at a community center.
A statement by the Long Beach School District says 16-year-old Shakur Moore was taken from the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center to a nearby hospital on Thursday night, where he died.
The school district "is deeply saddened at the loss," superintendent Dr. Robert Greenberg said in a statement.
Long Beach City Manager Charles Theofan says Moore was dribbling down court in a game at the community center and collapsed at about 8:30 p.m.
Theofan said the cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.
Nearly 600 people had posted condolences on a Facebook page dedicated to Moore by Friday morning.
