‘Minor Equipment Issue' Forces Brief Shutdown of Nuke Reactor at Indian Point

One of the two reactors at the Indian Point nuclear power plant will remain closed for a couple of days following a a minor equipment problem that forced a shutdown, the facility's owners said Sunday.

The Indian Point 2 reactor was shut down at around 5:30 p.m. Saturday after several control rods lost power.

Plant owner Entergy reported no radiation was released into the environment.

Entergy spokesman Jerry Nappi blamed the shutdown on "a relatively minor equipment issue" in an email Sunday.

The state Department of Public Service was headed to investigate the situation at the plant in Buchanan, about 30 miles north of midtown Manhattan.

The plant's other reactor, Indian Point 3, continues to operate. The two reactors supply about one-fourth of the power for New York City and Westchester County.

Indian Point 3 was shut down in July after a water pump problem.

The Cuomo Administration urged federal officials last month to deny the facility's application for a new license, arguing that the plant is old and a potential target for terrorism because of its proximity to New York City.
