Police on Long Island Shoot Man After Report He Threatened Dad With Knife

Police shot a man in the chest Wednesday morning after officers were called to a Long Island apartment complex for a report of a man threatening his father with a knife.

Suffolk County police said the man's father called 911 to report his son was not taking his psychiatric medication and was threatening to cut off the father's head.

Officers arrived at the complex in Deer Park and ended up chasing the man around the complex, on foot. At some point, they chased him back into the apartment, where an officer fired one shot, striking him in the chest, Detective Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick said.

Police would not comment on whether he had the knife at that point.

The son was undergoing surgery, officials said. The father was not injured.
