Police on Long Island say a man is dead after he fired at least 15 rounds at officers.
Suffolk County police went to a house in Shirley at about 10:30 p.m. Friday after neighbors heard a man yelling and firing a weapon.
When police approached, a man came to the back door armed with a shotgun and began firing at the officers.
Police say the man retreated into the house, then went out the front door and fired a rifle at officers in the street.
Officers returned fire and struck the shooter, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooter was wearing a helmet and a ballistic vest. Police say he fired at least 15 rounds at the officers.
The man's name is being withheld pending family notification.
