Jersey City PD Layoffs

City to give pink slips to over 80 cops, and will demote 12 others

New Jersey's second-largest city has sent layoff notices to 82 police officers and seven civilian police department employees.

The Jersey Journal reports the Jersey City sent the notices Thursday. The layoffs are to take effect Feb. 15.  A dozen other supervisory police officers are to be demoted.

Officials say the layoffs are necessary to address the city's financial woes.

Mayor Jerramiah Healy has said layoffs can be avoided if the police union agrees to contract concessions.

The union says there are other things the city can do to increase revenues and offset costs. It's suggested increasing fees from developers who hire off-duty officers at construction sites.

Jersey City currently has 830 police officers.
